Anaesthetists are doctors who have received specialised training in anaesthesia. They administer anaesthesia to you and are responsible for your safety and well-being during the procedure.
Before the procedure begins, your anaesthetist will discuss with you, among other things:
- which types of anaesthesia are suitable for the procedure you are to undergo
- what risks or side effects the different types of anaesthesia may have.
The anaesthetist will plan the anaesthesia and pain relief in consultation with you and take into account your preference for a particular type of anaesthesia. If you have any doubts or if not everything is clear to you, you can ask your anaesthetist to explain.
During surgery, your anaesthetist will carefully monitor your vital parameters - blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, blood oxygen level etc. - carefully. He also makes sure you wake up easily after the operation and helps you with any pain relief you may need after the procedure.
