Protection of personal privacyUnder Articles 15 and 17 quater of the hospital law, Ghent University Hospital is obliged to create a patient file for each patient which must be held in the hospital. This will contain the necessary nursing and medical information to guarantee the best possible care and treatment. Patient files will be created and held in accordance with the law of 8 December 1992 on the protection of private life (published in the Moniteur belge/Belgische Staatsblad of 18 March 1993). Every patient has the opportunity to obtain additional information from the public register as described in Article 18 of the law. In addition, everyone has the right under Article 12 of the law to have incorrect personal information corrected without charge. Corrections can be requested by a signed and dated application to the chief physician. Ghent University Hospital has drawn up a regulation governing the protection of private life in the processing of personal patient data.
