Your stay

On your arrival in the department a nurse will take you to your room. He or she will explain how the nursing unit operates and will answer your questions or meet your wishes as far as possible. The nurse can put you in contact with various people in the hospital (e.g. doctor, social nurse, member of the clergy etc.)

The nurse will also ask you some questions about your way of life in order to decide with you how you want to be nursed. You can choose which questions you answer. The nurse will make a note of this information in your nursing file. This information is protected by professional secrecy.

You may also talk to the head nurse on request. The head nurse is responsible for the organisation of the department and the nurses' work.

Meals

For breakfast, midday meal and evening meal we offer an extensive choice of dishes and ingredients. Different portions are possible if you prefer.

On weekdays, a colleague from menu requests will visit you to ask what you would like to eat the next day. There is also information about diet meals under heading 3 ‘Paramedical and non-medical services’.

You can view the menu any day on your television set on channel 40.

Practical tips

Telephone in your room

The rooms in the hospital are equipped with a telephone, with the exception of Intensive Care, the University Psychiatric Department and some children's departments. You can receive calls from outside the hospital. To make outside calls yourself, you must obtain a UZ telephone card from one of the Reception services. If you have any problems you can contact the switchboard on number 11. The use of mobile phones is permitted in the hospital. However you should remain at a distance of 1 metre from all medical equipment in use.

Internet access in the room

Ask the head nurse if you would like internet access in your room.

Television in your room

Most patients' rooms have a television set with remote control. Channel 40 is the Ghent University Hospital Info Channel, which you can consult for all kinds of useful information such as the week's menu, visiting hours etc.

Certain television broadcasters provide subtitling for some programmes via Teletext page 888.

Electrical equipment

For safety reasons it is strictly forbidden to bring or use electrical equipment in the hospital with a power of more than 200 Watts. Small electrical appliances such as a shaver, hairdryer, radio, tape recorder and laptop computer, and larger limited power appliances such as a video recorder and DVD player are permitted. Any appliance brought into the hospital must carry a CE approval label. Computers with wireless controls, such as a wireless mouse or keyboard, are permitted provided that they are kept at a distance of 1 metre from all medical equipment in use. Electrical appliances with a higher power rating such as toasters, microwave ovens, coffee machines, grills, kettles, deep fat fryers, waffle irons, hotplates and similar are forbidden. This list is merely indicative. Fridge and TV are provided by the hospital.

Money and valuables

Every bed has a lockable bedside table. We recommend you not to bring large sums of money or valuable objects into the hospital. The management is not responsible for the loss or theft of such items. However, if you have valuable objects with you, you can leave these for safekeeping at Reception in the hospital building in which you were admitted. You will be given a receipt. You can collect your possessions during office hours. For further information please contact this service (tel. 22015 for hospital building K1-K2, tel 24507 for hospital building K12).

Public telephone booths

Public telephone booths are located in various places in the hospital. These sets are coin-operated only.

Post

You can give your stamped correspondence to the Reception desk in your nursing department, or in the basement floor of K1-K2 (post box in the post sorting centre).
